John 2: 1-11
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (And) Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servers, "Do whatever he tells you." Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for a baby I know who is in the hospital.
Today is an optional feast day for Our Lady of Lourdes.
The Gospel reading from this feast day comes from the second chapter of St. John's Gospel. It is interesting to hear how the beginning of John's Gospel account is poetically parallel with Genesis. One of the parallels is found when the new Adam, Christ, calls the new Eve, Mary, by the name "woman."
Of course, beyond Genesis, there are other parallels. God's first miracle through Moses was when the water turned to blood. Once again, another parallel of today's reading with the Old Testament.
All these things point to the fact that Christ truly is The One who is fulfillment of the Old Testament scriptures and The One whom all things will come to completion through. Mary, His mother, points the servants to this when he says, "Do whatever He tells you." In today's reading, she tells all of us to "Do whatever He tells you."
This comes from the "woman" who said yes to God to bear Christ in her womb. Her life is the perfect model of being obedient to Our Lord in humble submission. Her words are the words of true humility in the sight of Our Lord. May we follow her example and ask for her intercession to help us to be humble and obedient. Take care and God Bless.
