Thoughts on Daily Mass

Click here for daily mass reflections.

I was blessed to have the opportunity to serve the RCIA program by providing music for them. I encountered one candidate who would have conversations with me about Hawaii, guitars, and The Church.

Now he is a neophyte, and he told me about desiring to go to daily mass for the first 30 days after receiving First Communion and Confirmation. He read it from Thomas Merton's book, "Seven Story Mountain" as a suggestion because it was something Thomas Merton regretted not doing.

Then the usual comment came up: "I don't know if I'm going to continue going to daily mass after that. I'll go sometimes, but I don't want it to become repetitive." With that came my response ...

"Every time you are at daily mass, you encounter Christ. You encounter Christ in the Eucharist. You encounter Christ in the scriptures. You will not leave unchanged because whenever you encounter Christ, you are never the same."

I saw him a day later at daily mass and he told me, "man, I've been thinking about what you said about encountering Christ and it stuck with me. I still wonder, though, if there are people at daily mass who are just going through the motions."

I had to think for a moment, because in my own life, I have felt the temptation not to go to mass. Even now, I struggle with it.

I know that my response was not from me but from The Holy Spirit, because it was the words I needed to hear as well ...

"When you leave mass, serve someone. You have encountered Christ, and now it is your responsibility to serve His people. You have been strengthened by His Words and The Eucharist. Serve His people everyday in a new way everyday and mass will not be dull."

With that, I praise God for the opportunity to serve, and I praise God for the gifts to receive Him in mass everyday.
