Luke 7:31-35

Jesus said to the crowds: "To what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another,

'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.'

For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine, and you said, 'He is possessed by a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is vindicated by all her children."

Dawg's thought:

Today's prayer intention is for those who will be affected by Hurricane Isabel, especially for loved ones you know.

For most of us, our identity is wrapped up in our occupation or our talents. To others, our identity is wrapped up in how they know us or how we act. Seldom do we remember who we are by the nature of our creation: the image and likeness of God.

In today's reading, it is this "labeling" that closes the hearts of the people in the crowd to seeing who Jesus really is. The hearts of the people would rather be right in their pride than being right with humility.

We must challenge ourselves constantly to look beyond what people do so that we do not get into the habit of seeing others as a means to our own end. We must be willing to look deeper in the true human dignity that God has bestowed in every human being, knowing that God made each person to love Him alone.

We must also challenge ourselves to look beyond what we do and what our talents are. First and foremost, we must be willing to accept ourselves as being made in the image and likeness of God, made to love God alone. We must be willing to accept ourselves as being truly beautiful, not needing affirmation through people using us for the things that we do and the talents that we have. We are beautiful because that's the way we are made; we have nothing more to prove. Take care and God Bless.
