Matthew 13:44-46

Jesus said to his disciples: "The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it."

Dawg's thought:

Today's prayer intention is for

I was in Las Vegas recently and I had the opportunity to watch people faithfully placing coin after coin into a slot machine hoping to win the jackpot. It is amazing to see the persistence of these "casino dwellers" as they faithfully place their hope in this jackpot.

At first thought, in trying to tie in a slot machine to the Kingdom of Heaven, the parallel of the faithful "casino dweller" to our need to give what we have to God was about to come out. Then I realized that slot machines can only take three coins at a time, slowly taking your treasure away from you. In a sense, I could see how the slot machine was more a parallel to sin versus the Kingdom of Heaven. The more we feed sin, the more we lose to sin.

Left to our own devices, we too will slowly invest more and more into the slot machine known as sin. This is why we must invest all of our thoughts and all of our desires on heaven. This is why in the "Our Father," we pray, "on earth as it is in heaven." Our eyes, our thoughts and our desires must be directed toward heaven because wandering hearts lead to infidelity. Wandering hearts are tamed with virtue. Here's an excerpt from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

--

Human virtues are firm attitudes, stable dispositions, habitual perfections of intellect and will that govern our actions, order our passions, and guide our conduct according to reason and faith. They make possible ease, self-mastery, and joy in leading a morally good life. The virtuous man is he who freely practices the good.

Take care and God Bless.
