Thursday in the Second Week of Lent
Jeremiah 17:5-10

Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings, who seeks his strength in flesh, whose heart turns away from the LORD. He is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season, But stands in a lava waste, a salt and empty earth. Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD. He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: It fears not the heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; In the year of drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit. More tortuous than all else is the human heart, beyond remedy; who can understand it? I, the LORD, alone probe the mind and test the heart, To reward everyone according to his ways, according to the merit of his deeds.

Dawg's thought:

Today's prayer intention is for Pope John Paul II, who is back in the hospital with the flu.

"Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings..."

A lot of anxiety has been caused by this. I often think of the human being whom I look at in the mirror: myself. After all, when you look at the curse of original sin, it all started because Adam and Eve did not trust in God. Our pride is the same fruit Adam and Eve reached for. They indeed inherited their curse, trusting in lies and turning from The Lord.

"Cursed is the man who hangs on a tree..."

I can't remember where this is from, but when St. Paul began persecuting Christians, I remember this line in particular as a means of justification to persecute the early Christians. Yet, it was the human curse that Our Lord took on that allows each of us to have a share in the eternal banquet of The Lamb. It is through Christ that we have the ability to understand today's reading profoundly because we can partake of His Body and His Blood as the tree who stands close to the stream. The person who stays close to Our Lord and trusting in Him is blessed indeed. We must stay very close to the sacraments if we are to grow in holiness. Take care and God Bless.
