Matthew 6:7-15

Jesus said to his disciples: "In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

"This is how you are to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

"If you forgive men their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions."

Dawg's thought:

Today's prayer intention is for the new candidates and catechumens that will be Baptized, Confirmed and receiving Our Lord in the Eucharist this Easter.

How many of you, upon reading today's reading, just glanced through the text of the Our Father?

It's amazing to see how the past two days within the first week of Lent brings us the Ten Commandments and the Our Father. As we enter into this season of penance, notice how we return to these treasures of Our Faith in order to examine our conscience so that we can truly see how we need to be purified from our sinful tendencies.

As the year began for me, the mantra that kept going on in my head is "Are you humble enough to love?" Today's reading reminds us that we must be humble enough to forgive others knowing that we need to be forgiven as well. In forgiving others, we love our neighbor. In seeking forgiveness, we act out of the desire to be with Our Lord, and that is a desire that comes from loving Our Lord. All this is foreign to pride, and pride will never be able to understand this.

As we continue to live our lives striving to be closer to God, may we always return to this prayer that Christ gives us. It is a prayer of trust and surrender to Our Lord, and it is this season that we are called to trust in Him and surrender to Him. Take care and God Bless.
