Matthew 19: 3-12
Some Pharisees approached Jesus, and tested him, saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?" He said in reply, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and female and said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate." They said to him, "Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss her?" He said to them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery." His disciples said to him, "If that is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry." He answered, "Not all can accept this word, but only those to whom that is granted. Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so; some, because they were made so by others; some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it."
Dawg's Thought:
Today's prayer intention - for Mr. Caraveo, who had open heart surgery and is recovering.
It's amazing to think about the lives we live and in contrast to the way things were in Jesus' time. We have come so far with technology and knowledge of the human person. We have easy access to information, and multiple means to deliver it.
It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we are "most advanced."
Divorce must have been a commonplace occurrence among the Jews in Jesus' time. It was probably a part of their culture and they way the understood marriage. Yet, Christ brings them back to the beginning.
In our world today, God has not changed. With all the things that have changed since the beginning, God is still God and we are still His children.
I remember when I was a teenager and I knew all these things that my parents didn't know about like how to program the VCR. It would have been preposterous to then turn around and tell them that their rules no long apply to me. Why do we do this to God?
You would hope that the more you grew to know your parents, the more you will come to know their love for you and grow in love of them. Why do we spend so much time trying to figure out things when we spend so little time getting to know God? Spending the time to get to know new things isn't bad in itself, but there is a greater good that we may be ignoring.
Now that I'm older, I spend less time trying to prove to my parents how much know. Instead, I like to spend time appreciating how much they know. They knew me when I was born. So did God. Let us choose the greater good, like Martha's sister Mary, who spend time at the feet of Jesus.
Take care and God Bless.
