Friday in the First Week of Lent
Matthew 5: 20-26

Jesus said to his disciples: "I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.

"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, 'You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.' But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for the continued recovery efforts in Japan.

I can only imagine the words spoken to Christ on the Way of the Cross. The One Who's name was holy was now being called names that we can surely imagine.

"Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do."

Imagining the types of words that were spoken brings sadness to my heart. It bring sadness because they spoke those words to my Beloved Jesus, and it brings sadness because I have spoken a lot of words to others and about others.

There are phrases that are spoken in faith circles, such as "dignity of life". Can I truly be someone who upholds the dignity of life if while I say that I want to protect the lives of the unborn, I speak words of degradation about my neighbor? Am I upholding the dignity of life if I permit my neighbor to speak ill about others?

What does that speak of a person's interior disposition? Am I loving my neighbor if I speak ill of him or reduce his dignity by calling him a "fool" or worse?

Let us pray fervently for "purity of heart" so that we can see the face of God on earth and one day in Heaven. Take care and God Bless.
