Luke 11: 47-54

The Lord said: "Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets whom your fathers killed. Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building. Therefore, the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and Apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute' in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood! Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter." When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things, for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

Today's prayer intention is for an end to contraception.

Trying to Trap God

The scribes and the Pharisees could not see that God was truly present in front of them because of the hardness of their hearts. If they knew it was God who was talking to them, would they have tried to trap God?

We have the advantage of being an "outsider looking in" in today's reading. None of us try to put God into a box. After all, we all know that God is constant from the beginning of time until it's fulfillment. We all know that we are called to be obedient to His will, removing from us the twisted desires of our own hearts. We all know that God loves us and therefore we have no reason to negotiate with God.

We all know these things, but have we become too complacent with knowing these things? The scribes and the Pharisees were very knowledgeable when it came to God's word, but somehow they missed the point, and not even Jesus could set them straight. They were too busy knowing the Word of God versus being obedient to God. They have fallen into the trap of pride, looking at how great they are in knowing how much they know about God's word versus being obedient to God's Word (standing right in front of them).

May you never grow prideful in knowing the Christ. Rather, may you grow more obedient with love in knowing Christ. Take care and God Bless.
