Luke 13: 22-30

Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few people be saved?" He answered them, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, 'Lord, open the door for us.' He will say to you in reply, 'I do not know where you are from.' And you will say, 'We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.' Then he will say to you, 'I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!' And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the Kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for an end to abortion and the use of contraception.

In our modern day lives, the late Pope John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa come to mind as those who have lived lives striving to enter through the narrow gate.

When I have read through today's reading, it seemed like entering into the "narrow gate" was all about having secret knowledge of what is to come. Yet, neither Pope John Paul II nor Blessed Mother Teresa lived their lives that way. Instead, they lived lives that strove to make Jesus known. They wanted everyone to enter into the narrow gate.

Which makes me think that it is no narrow because it is a great secret. It is narrow because it is truly a hard way. There will be many who will think that they have lived blessed lives who will hear the words, "I do not know where you are from." In heaven, the ways of sin are not there.

In order to get through a narrow gate, you have to get rid of a lot of things. We must decrease for the sake of an increase in Christ.

The bicycle I ride has a weight limit on it. I am normally right on the line of crossing that weight limit. I notice that when I am watching what I eat daily, and I'm diligent on incorporating exercise, I can keep myself at the weight or even go below it. If I neglect keeping track of my weight, I gain the weight back on.

In the same way, I recognize that in order to strive to walk through a narrow gate, I have to keep track of the "weight" of my soul. Telling myself that I'm doing okay for a few days normally seems to add sinful weight to my soul a few pounds at a time.

Lord, help us to recall Your ways throughout our days remembering that You call us to enter through a gate that is narrow.

Take care and God Bless.
