Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Easter |
John 10: 22-30
The feast of the Dedication was taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter. And Jesus walked about in the temple area on the Portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." Jesus answered them, "I told you and you do not believe. The works I do in my Father's name testify to me. But you do not believe, because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father's hand. The Father and I are one."
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention - for safety for those who are traveling and for those who are sick.
It is comforting to know that no one can take us our of Our Lord's hand.
There are a lot of things that may happen in His hands. We may face hardship and sorrow. We may experience being lost. We may think that we are failing.
No one can take us out of Our Lord's hand ...
Sometimes it may seem more comfortable outside of Our Lord's hands. Even tougher is sometimes being outside of Our Lord's hands may seem like being inside of Our Lord's hands. Saul (who later became Saint Paul) thought that he was in union with the Lord's will when he was killing Christians.
He may have been gripped in the hands of the evil one just like many are today. Yet, Jesus doesn't say that no one can take "them" out of the evil one's hands. He doesn't say no one is lost in the grasp of sin.
"My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me."
It's an easy temptation to gloss over the fact that we are made with the impulse to follow if we are made to follow the call of Our Lord. We know that God loves us, and in His love, why would He create us without the desire to follow? We have the desire to follow, even if we are told that we are called to follow our own desires ... called to follow our own impulses ... called to follow our own voice. We will be following someone ...
Hopefully it is the Lord. Hopefully it is the One Who no one can take us away from. Hopefully it is the One Who is risen ... Who is alive ... Who has conquered death.
Hopefully, we are obedient just as Our Lord was obedient unto death ... death on a cross. Take care and God Bless.
