John 3:16-21
God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for the safety of all those who are traveling, especially those who are are visiting Pope John Paul II.
You can see them now... holding up signs at sporting events, concerts and any other large gatherings...
John 3:16
It's become such an icon (especially on yellow paper with black marker lettering) that it has often been imitated in different incarnations to portray anything other that what the Bible passage means. Regardless of the mockery, though, people still hold up the signs in hopes that someday someone will open their Bible's and realize what God has been trying to tell us all along.
The icon calls us to "believe" and to "come to the light" but many who see the icon know what to do. Unfortunately, though, the yellow and black beacon has not had much effect, but instead has been the victim of imitation and mockery. Funny how such a simple little icon can be mocked. Funny how The Son that the icon points to was mocked as well.
I was never a convert through the yellow icon. I am in conversion through Christ. I am in conversion because of His suffering and because of His triumph. This is why it is so important to call everyone you can to Christ through the way your bear your own suffering - with full abandon to trusting in God. This morning I was not a good beacon of this, but I am still in conversion, and I aspire one day to be just like the "yellow" sign: a sign that points to Christ. Take care and God Bless.
