Our Lady of Sorrows |
Luke 2:33-35
Jesus' father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for protection and guidance for Pope Benedict XVI as he calls all religions to stop using religious motivation to justify violence.
Today is The Church is the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows.
I had a nice long talk with my mother this morning. We talked about a lot of different things and a lot of different things that she's worried about. After all, she's a mother. She's more concerned with her the welfare of her children than she is about her own welfare.
What strikes me is how thinking about my own mother's worries gives me a glimpse into Mary's sorrow. The seven sorrows of Mary are as follows:
- at the prophecy of Simeon
- at the flight into Egypt
- having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem
- meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary
- standing at the foot of the Cross
- Jesus being taken from the Cross
- at the burial of Christ
What strikes from today's reading is this line:
"... you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
The sorrows she experienced reveals the thoughts many hearts. Read and reflect again through the seven sorrows and be thankful. Take care and God Bless.
