Luke 12: 1-7

At that time: So many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples, "Beware of the leaven--that is, the hypocrisy--of the Pharisees.

"There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows."

Today's prayer intention - for those who are evangelizing away from their homes, that their sacrifice may be blessed.

Growing up, I didn't get a chance to go to Catholic school until I was in the seventh grade. Actually, I knew nothing about the faith, except that I made a deal with God to pray to Him every morning because He helped me find a paper I worked very hard on.

My exposure to the faith was a shock to me at first because I felt like I had nobody to mentor me. I remembered a few things. I needed to find a line in the Bible to read before lunchtime, so I chose something out of Tobit, which is a great book for someone who had no clue about theology, but had a great imagination. The other thing I remember was today's reading.

I was a tall, awkward kid in a new school. I was looking for something to affirm who I was in this awkward situation. Today's reading reminded me that God knows who I am, and cares about who I am.

Today, I hear this reading and I think, "Oh, the sparrows reading again." Yet, something about today brought me back to the days when I was searching for affirmation of who I am. I am a child of God, and God knows every strand of hair on my head. God deeply cares about who I am, which is important in this world where it is easy to lose who you are.

We try to see who we are in our friends. We try to see who are in our families. We try to see who we are in comparison to world, fed to us by the media and advertisers who want you to think that your life is incomplete so that they can sell you something.

They touch on the truth that we are incomplete ...

"Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee, O Lord" - St. Augustine

Tonight, thank God for your family. Thank God for your friends. Thank God for all the blessings in your life. Then, thank God for Who He is and take the time to rest in Him.

Take care and God Bless.
