John 19: 25-27
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
Dawg's Thought:
Today's prayer intention - For those who are struggling with addictions.
Can you imagine what it must have been like for a mother to hear her Son speak these words signaling the end of His life?
I remember my phone call in the ambulance to my mother. I wanted to comfort her, and the one way that I felt that I could do that was to make everything seem like I was okay. I kept telling her that I would be alright.
I remember once when I was a witness to a shooting. The man who was shot told me to call his mother and tell her the news. He wanted me to tell her that he would be alright. When I told her the news, I tried to do my best to comfort her, and eventually she did calm down.
Christ could have said many things to her in His last words. He could have told her not to worry because He would be resurrected on the third day. She probably knew this already.
Instead, in one of His "Seven Last Words", He entrusts Mary to the ones who love Him.
It is interesting to ponder this. If this is so, it is not only Mary who has been entrusted to be "Mother" of all peoples, but it is also up to us to care for her as mother.
When my mother doesn't hear from me in a few days, she makes sure she calls and leaves a message ...
"Hi, Junior, this is mom. Can you call me when you have time. Okay ... bye." (yes, in my family, I am Junior)
It's a good reminder of a way that I can care for my mother: calling her to let her know that I'm okay. It's also a good reminder for me that I am loved by my mother.
Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. Beloved disciple, behold your mother.
Take care and God Bless.
