Matthew 22:34-40
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for those who are struggling with cancer and those who struggle with depression.
A little light flickered in my head just now as I read the words, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." It was a brief flicker.
Suddenly, the passage sounded like, "Love your neighbor knowing that you are connected to him, unified through Christ." In the same way that we need to be united to Christ through prayer and the sacraments, we need to be united with our brothers and sisters recognizing that their good is also our good. In the "Litany of Humility", the third part of the prayer begins with, "That others may loved more than I... That others may be esteemed more than I..."
When we love others, we love ourselves and, even more profoundly, we love God because we are loving His children. Let us be a people who love Our Lord by remaining obedient to His commandments He gives us today. Take care and God Bless.
