Luke 8:19-21
The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you." He said to them in reply, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it."
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for an end to the use of contraception.
"The family of Jesus is not constituted by physical relationship with him but by obedience to the word of God. In this, Luke agrees with the Marcan parallel (Mark 3:31-35), although by omitting Mark 3:33 and especially Mark 3:20-21 Luke has softened the Marcan picture of Jesus' natural family. Probably he did this because Mary has already been presented in Luke 1:38 as the obedient handmaid of the Lord who fulfills the requirement for belonging to the eschatological family of Jesus; cf also Luke 11:27-28."

Singer / Songwriter Rich Mullins passed away 10 years ago last week. I decided to put a tape of one of his concerts in the day after. As I was listening, he made one comment about how, as he looked at the lives of the saints, they may not have "felt" close to God, but one thing that showed that they were close to God was obedience.
In today's reading, we are reminded that we have to act on God's word. We are called to be obedient if we desire to be with Him in heaven.
Take care and God Bless.
