Thursday in the First Week of Advent
Matthew 7: 21, 24-27

Jesus said to his disciples: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

"Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined."

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for the repose of the soul of Lorraine Casey.

A long time ago, I helped build a house. The house was a large house and it was meant to hold a lot of people. It was a home for expectant mothers who had no home.

At the foundation of the house was the desire to act upon the words that were spoken to the founders of the home. The foundation was the desire to serve those who were in need and to protect the dignity of life. The foundation was a response to words of Christ.

There was a fire in the home a few years ago, yet regardless of the tragedy, the foundation stood firm ... they are still providing a home for expectant mothers who have no home. They are still responding to Christ ...

After this experience, in which I not only helped build the home, but I also became a staff member, I thought it would be great to visit other homes build on the "Catholic Worker" model. I was shocked to see homes that provided needles and condoms. I knew that deep down, there was the desire to provide for the poor. Unfortunately, what was missing was the desire to protect the dignity of their lives. Instead, it protected the dignity of their lifestyle while denying Who God is and who they were made in the image and likeness of.

What happens when your foundation is more about protecting a lifestyle versus protecting someone's life? What happens when the foundation is to hear the words of someone who is addicted and acting on it versus hearing the words of Christ and acting on it?

There are a lot of people who live in poverty. There are a lot of people who would rather protect the dignity of their lifestyle versus protecting their own lives and the lives of those around them. There are a lot of people who don't know Who their foundation is built upon.

Lord, strengthen us so that You alone are our foundation,
not only by being made in Your image and likeness,
but also in our actions which can easy be swayed
by our own desires and sinfulness.

Jesus I trust in You. Jesus I trust in You. Jesus I trust in You. Amen.

Take care and God Bless.
