Wednesday in the Seventh Week of Easter |
John 17: 11b-19
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: "Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one. When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely. I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the Evil One. They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth."
Dawg's Thought:
Today's prayer intention - for an end to abortion and the use of contraception.
Unity. Perseverance. Joy. Holiness.
I decided to see what the Navarre Bible had to say about today's reading, and it outlined these four things that Jesus prays for. If this is what Jesus is praying for, how can we see this in our everyday lives?
After all, there are a lot of people who desire "unity" without truth. I think of those who want to be accepted because they desire to act on disordered urges. Yet, is it unity that they desire, or is it merely acceptance?
We should desire unity, not only for us, but also for them. In recognizing that we should strive that all are united to The Church as Jesus and The Father are united, we should remember Jesus' prayer.
We should implore that Jesus protect them so that they would not be lost. We should implore that they may share completely in the joy of Christ, not the false hope of sin. We should implore that we may speak the words of Christ versus our own words.
It is a shameful thing when I think about the things I choose to persevere in. I am much more ready to persevere in riding my bike extra miles versus offering Christ's truth to someone trapped in sin.
We have a great gem in today's reading because Christ reveals His heart to us. He desires holiness for us! How can we not believe that The Father hears the prayer of His Son.
Let us go forth, then, and be co-workers with The Father so that the will of the Son is fulfilled. Let every time we pray, "Thy will be done," be a reminder that The Father is answering the prayer of Son through us.
In doing so, are we not unifying ourselves in Christ ... persevering in Christ ... joyful in Christ ... and most of all, sanctified in Christ. Take care and God Bless.
