Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus |
John 19: 31-37
Since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may come to believe. For this happened so that the Scripture passage might be fulfilled: Not a bone of it will be broken. And again another passage says: They will look upon him whom they have pierced.

Today's prayer intention - in thanksgiving for blessings.
"Behold this heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to the point of spending itself and being consumed to prove its love to them. And in return, I receive from most men only ingratitude because of their irreverence and sacrileges and the coldness and scorn they have for me in this Sacrament of love. But what offends me most is that hearts consecrated to me act in this way. Do thou at least console me by supplying for their ingratitude, as far as thou art able." - Jesus' words to St. Margaret Mary
We know what Christ has done to show us His love. What are we doing?
This quote comes from the third revelation of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary. In this same revelation, Jesus also gives her petitions, and one of them is, "You are to receive Communion as often as obedience will permit you." It is easy to think of acts of love in grandiose terms, but Jesus calls her to the simplicity of going to Mass.
Doesn't that elevate the importance of going to Mass and receiving Holy Communion? Our act of going to receive Him is our act of love. Our act of being present during the consecration is our being present with Him at the moment He offers Himself as an Oblation.
If this is the case, then, are we also "holding back" our love when we do not invite others to come and receive His Body and His Blood worthily?
What about our own disposition when we receive? Are we grateful? I remember talking to a priest who was at a parish where they stopped celebrating daily Mass in the afternoons. This priest said that he was there at the parish, he would celebrate Mass because it was needed.
We need the Mass. We need the Eucharist. He gives us His Body and Blood, and in doing so, we are given the gift to be grateful for Jesus' sacrifice ... we are given the gift to respond to His love initiated on the wood of the cross ... we are given the gift to love Him in the great mystery.
I hear a priest once say that this solemnity is like Valentine's Day for the Church. On this day, let us receive the great gifts He offers us so that we may be grateful again ... and again ... and again. Take care and God Bless.
