Matthew 22: 34-40
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for those who struggle with addictions.
This is a really hard reading to write a reflection on. After all, it is the summation of God's commandments. After hearing this reading, I imagine the Pharisees just nodding their heads saying, "Wow, He's right." In fact, I'm sitting here doing the same thing.
So, if this is such a profound Truth, why is it so hard to follow?
After the fall in The Garden, we have become a people who has adopted fear. Suddenly, our choices are not based on trusting in the Lord. Our choices are made out of fear. This is why Jesus came as the new Adam through the new Even, Mary. Jesus was made human to restore order where fear has caused disorder. He restores order with the truth, and today we have the truth of the two greatest commandments. Later in His life, He would show us how to live out the truth as He gives His life on the cross.
Take care and God Bless.
