Solemnity of All Saints
Matthew 5: 1-12a

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven."

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for the repose of the soul of Nancy Augustyn.

Not a lot of people know of the word "Waipio" unless you're on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. I grew up there, although technically I still lived in the city of Waipahu.

For a long time I wanted to play baseball when I was growing up, so finally when I had my chance to play, I joined the Waipio league and I played for two seasons. On the first team I played on, we came in first place in our league. On the second ... well, we came in last place.

Recently, the name "Waipio" was in the news because the Little League baseball team not only made it to the World Series, but won the whole thing. As a person who used to play in that league, there was something special about that moment.

I brought me back to when I used to play baseball there. I thought about those kids playing on the same fields that I used to play on.

I remember the practices. I remember all the running that I had to do. I remember practicing my swing in the mirror so that I could become a better hitter. I remember all trying to win the game ball for being the one who had the best attitude for the game. For a little kid, it was a lot of work. I am sure the kids on the Little League championship team put in a lot of work as well.

Today we celebrate the Saints who have made it to the place that we are all working hard to get to. They put in the hard work, and we can celebrate with them. They put in all the hard work, and we know that we can get there as well.

The Beatitudes of today point to the blessings that are beyond what we can see. What it takes to get there doesn't sound glamourous, but neither was running laps. Yet, when it came to playing the whole game, the endurance earned through running made a big difference. In the same way, being merciful and meek may not seem glamourous, but it is the way of Christ ... it is the way of the Saints ... and it is the way we can live in the hope of Heaven. Take care and God Bless.
