Feast of St. John, Apostle and Evangelist |
1 John 1: 1-4
Beloved: What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life - for the life was made visible; we have seen it and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was made visible to us - what we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing this so that our joy may be complete.
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for our troops in the Middle East who are away from their families during this Christmas season. May God grant them peace and know that He is with them.
"... our joy may be complete."
As a child, there is a great amount of joy when you receive a present. It's amazing how it turns around when you're an adult and you have the opportunity to give a gift to a child. When you see their face and see their happiness, that brings you so much more joy. It's a profound joy that cannot be achieved through receiving. There is joy in giving because in giving, there is love.
Today's reading, St. John talks his joy and how he wants his joy to be ours. His joy is in Christ.
While we know that our joy in complete in Christ, we often get lost in finding that joy. How often to we spend quiet time alone with Him? How often do we turn to Him when we feel lost or feel like things are impossible? How often to we turn to Him when we are blinded by lies? Of course, there are other joys that we may not associate with Him. When we receive something that we always wanted. When we are in a relationship with someone we truly care about. When we have more free time. These things bring us joy, but these things are all through Christ and point to the true joy that can be found in Christ. When we give of ourselves, we imitate Christ. When we receive, we are reminded that Christ gave Himself to us. All things are through Christ, and all things point to Christ. Take care and God Bless.
