Matthew 5: 38-42

Jesus said to his disciples: "You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow."

Dawg's thought:

Today's reading intention is for a special intention.

When someone cuts me off, this reading is far from my heart. Very far. When I'm behind the wheel, I know that my heart's desire is "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

Today's reading challenges us all to a greater understanding of the Gospel message. What is greater: holding on to your pride or giving of yourself? There will come a time when God will ask you the same thing: are you willing to go further for the sake of the Gospel? Are you willing to give more of yourself than your pride is willing to let go? Are you willing to sacrifice your life for the Gospel we are all called to live?

I want to offer some reflection time for you today. Reflect upon the following three statements and discern how each applies to your life:

1. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. (Quick note: Back in Jesus' time, to be struck on the right cheek meant that you were a slave. To be struck on the left cheek meant that you were an equal.)

2. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well.

3. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles.

I know what you're thinking: why is he giving us homework? I'm already done with school. Well, if you're thinking that, then you might want to read through this reading one more time. I pray you find peace this day. Take care and God Bless.
