Acts 6:8-15
Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people. Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyreneans, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. Then they instigated some men to say, "We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God." They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin. They presented false witnesses who testified, "This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law. For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us." All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for the next Pope, that God is preparing his heart to be a holy example and a humble leader.
To do the work of God doesn't win popularity contests. It's amazing to hear how people are saying that now that maybe the new pope will allow changes in the Church to make it more relevant to the global agenda.
Since the fall of man, there are many who want to change who God is because God doesn't fit into their own agenda. St. Stephen didn't fit into the Sanhedrin's plan. Jesus didn't fit into the Pharisee's plan. I'm sure there are agendas in my own life that has no room for God because of my own fallen nature.
Today's reading is not about thinking how evil the Sanhedrin are. Today's reading allows us to look at the how St. Stephen was not afraid to accept God's plan for him. Today's reading opens our own eyes to how we CAN be faithful to God's truth. We must be willing to surrender ourselves to God's "grace and power" to be able to speak God's truth and not our own agenda's. Take care and God Bless.
