Matthew 23:1-12
Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi.' As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. Do not be called 'Master'; you have but one master, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for those who contemplate suicide, that they come to know and understand God's great love for them.
Rabbi. Father. Master.
Here on earth, we know and understand each of these terms (although "rabbi" is not a normal word in our everyday language). Through our understanding of these terms, we can come to know and understand who God is.
God is no longer a foreign and abstract concept. Through Christ, we can truly come to know God, and in today's reading, we see the person of God through three persons of authority. In knowing who God is, we begin to understand who we are as student, child and servant. These three submit to The Greater with humility. The true student is attentive to the words of The Teacher in the hopes of growing in wisdom and mastery of their gifts. The child relies totally upon The Father with affection and trust. The servant waits upon the words of The Master, knowing that he will be rewarded for his obedience.
God constantly reveals Himself to us on a daily basis. The more we learn of God, the more we learn of ourselves and the more we truly come to understand how the humble will be exalted. Take care and God Bless.
