Matthew 8: 23-27

As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him. Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep. They came and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We are perishing!" He said to them, "Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?" Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm. The men were amazed and said, "What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?"

Dawg's Thought:

Today's prayer intention - for those who are suffering with cancer.

Sometimes, my first reaction when I'm hit by a "wave" is to freak out. For as much as I know that God has dominion over all created things, I still turn to God hoping that He will give me the reason not to fear.

He is the reason we shouldn't fear.

When the storms of our lives seem out of control, and it seems like all we are doing is waiting for Jesus to calm it down, are we missing the point? Shouldn't we recognize that He has dominion over all created things, and as such, if we are enduring a suffering, then it is because He is allowing it? If He is allowing it and we are not accepting it, we are the ones who are lacking faith. Recognizing that we are called to participate with Him in suffering is much harder than asking Him to make sure that we never have the chance to "freak out".

He is the reason we shouldn't fear. Take care and God Bless.

E-Mail Response
I got an email response from today's reflection that I wanted to share ...

The image of riding atop the waves with Jesus is a good image for what it means to participate in his suffering. It portrays him riding over sin, which stirs and disturbs, tosses and jarrs. Well when we know he is up there we will be with him through it all, but when we think we're alone, suddenly we find we're swallowed by the waves. And the suffering of the world is always there, like the churning ocean...but scripture tells us he is never going away. We should wish to be not necessarily on the shore, but always with him.
