John 14: 27-31a
Jesus said to his disciples: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, 'I am going away and I will come back to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me, but the world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the Father has commanded me."
Dawg's Thought:
Today's prayer intention - for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Growing up, I never really knew the whole concept of love. What I did know is that my dad worked many jobs and I rarely saw him until the weekends. What I did know is that my mom worked at the hospital, and when she was done, I would ride on the bus with her to go home or to go to my piano lesson.
Through my parents, I saw what it meant to sacrifice. They helped show me what it meant to love, even though I didn't know it. I thought that this is how life was.
Looking back, there was a unique exchange of obedience that was shared between me and my parents. My parents were obedient to the needs that I had as a child; I was obedient to following the will of my parents.
Our Father, in a unique way, shows us the love that He has in His perfect will through and for Christ. In today's reading, Christ reminds us that He does the will of the Father. The Father's will for Christ in today's reading is for Christ to return to Him. The Father invites His Son home.
As The Father invites His Son home, Christ reminds us that we should rejoice.
I'm sure that there are many reasons for this rejoicing, but what comes to mind first is that we know that there is a Heaven, where Jesus is and where the Father is. We are invited to be there. Have you ever been invited to a special event? I still remember the excitement I had when I went to mass in St. Peter's Basilica where Pope Benedict XVI was presiding at mass.
Today, if your heart is troubled or afraid, remember that The Father has a unique love for you, and shows it through His unique "obedience" to you yesterday, today, and forever. Take care and God Bless.
