Luke 11: 29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here."
Dawg's Thought:
Today's prayer intention - for the sanctity of marriage as created by God between one man and one woman.
There was a song in the 80's called "What Have You Done for Me Lately" that reminds me of my fantasy football team (yes, I'm playing it again this year after my brothers got me to join last year). So far this year, the people who I felt would do good ... does bad ... and the people I felt would do bad ... does really good.
It's a moving target.
So, here's Jesus and He comes into town and they want to see something amazing. They want to be entertained. They want the equivalent to 200 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. It's almost as if they're saying, "alright, Jesus, prove to me that you're worth being on my team."
It reminds me of how sometimes I'm quick to place Jesus on my bench and put myself or someone or something else in the starting lineup ... "Sure, Jesus is a good person to have on my team, but when it comes to my finances, I know my situation best and He'll understand." There is something greater than Jonah here.
What else can God say to remind me that He has dominion over all things? Am I waiting for a sign in order for me to surrender my pride?
I know that it is an act of my own free will, just as it was the "crowd's" free will to allow Christ to be God for them. Our free will doesn't change Who Christ is, but it does affect each of us. I've benched Him and followed "who's hot" too many times to know. Which is why I am so grateful for His mercy.
Lastly, it is comforting to know that it is not me who chose Him for my team, but rather He Who calls me to follow. I have been blessed by His call to serve, and may I continue to follow.
Take care and God Bless.
