Friday of the Third Week of Easter |
John 6: 52-59
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his Flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink his Blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever." These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Dawg's Thought:
Today's prayer intention - for those who entered into the Church this past Easter.
Jesus knew the question they were asking and in response tells them again that if they want to have life within them, eat His Flesh and drink His Blood. They were more concerned about how Christ could give them His Flesh and Blood versus hearing that in the receiving of His Flesh and His Blood we will have eternal life.
You would think that they would rejoice in this.
There are a lot of people who have a hard time believing the Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. It was hard for the Pharisees as well. While Our Lord wanted to share the joyful news that He is offering us His Body and His Blood so that we may have life, God's own people wanted to know how can this be. Why was it hard to trust that God wanted them to have this good gift?
I wonder if that is why Jesus calls us to have a childlike faith. I have never heard a child say when receiving a gift, "how can it be that you're giving me something as good as this." On the other hand, I've heard adults say, "you shouldn't have given me such an expensive gift."
Christ invites us to have eternal life. Christ invites us to remain in Him. Christ invites to eat His Flesh and drink His Blood. Take care and God Bless.
