Luke 9:57-62
As Jesus and his disciples were proceeding on their journey, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head." And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father." But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God." And another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home." Jesus answered him, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God."
Dawg's thought:
Today's prayer intention is for a friend of mine who ran into a pedestrian and for the pedestrian who was hit.
October 4th is the Memorial of St. Francis.
In a homily that Pope John Paul II gave on St. Francis, he referenced the scripture passage "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Whoever loses his life for my sake will save it."
As we think of ourselves as true disciples, the idea of "giving things up for Christ" is more than just an ideal that can wait for tomorrow. St. Francis did not wait to become holy. When Christ called him, he did not have an excuse.
When I read through today's reading, I think about how cunning Satan is with the lie that "holiness can wait until tomorrow." We are called to be saints today. Take care and God Bless.
